Lessons from Quarantine

Updated: May 5, 2020

Everyone is in a different situation during quarantine, and we cannot compare our situations to others. We need to focus on ourselves and figuring out what works best for us. Many people have been struggling with the shelter in place order, and a lot of people have been complaining about this. These complaints are valid because sometimes you just need to vent. We should be able to vent to our friends and family without being lectured on why we need to we need to adhere to the shelter in place. Granted, it is nicer to focus on the positives, so I just want to highlight what has been working best for me to maintain my life as normal as possible during this time.

Here are some things I have been focusing on:

· Sleeping consistent hours

· Working out every day

· Eating regular meals

· Building snacks into my day

· Take a break

Sleeping consistent hours. Sleep is very important to our health. Our bodies’ have a natural circadian rhythm that they like to follow. Granted, I have pushed my normal sleeping hours to be later at night so I can sleep in an extra hour in the morning. This has helped me to remain refreshed when I wake up in the morning.

Working out every day. I like to start my morning with exercise to get the blood flowing and fully wake up my body. Now that I am stuck indoors more than normal, I am finding it more important than ever to be active. I am not able to walk around as much. Between my job and school, I am more sedentary and on the computer during the day. I need to make sure I get some activity in to maintain balance in my body. On rest days, I still try to get outside for a walk. This allows me to keep my body moving and get some fresh air.

Eating regular meals. I am trying to eat three meals a day at the same time every day. This is helping me remember to eat and also preventing me from overeating. Now, I am eating smaller meals than normal because I am snacking more than normal during this time.

Building snacks into the day. Many people like to eat when bored, and so do I. Instead of trying to deprive myself of eating, I am planning snacks into my day. I am planning easy things like carrots with hummus, apples with nut butter, trail mix, berries with whip cream, avocado toast, or pretzels.

Take a break. I have been dedicating an hour or two every day to doing something I love to do. I do not do the same thing everyday with this time. Some days I read a book, take a nap, go for a long walk, watch Netflix, or do a combination of these things. This let’s my brain reset and get ready to get back to work.

I have heard people say that everyone should pick up a new hobby during quarantine, but not everyone has the opportunity to do so. If you don’t want to pick up a hobby, then don’t. It is your job to do the best you can during this time, and nothing more. I hope that these things help you to balance your life during this time.
